Local Food

Treasure Valley Food Coalition

The Treasure Valley Food Coalition, a program of Sustainable Community Connections of Idaho, is a network of community members working together to create a sustainable local food system.

Statement of Purpose
Supporting sustainable agriculture, our local food system and community food security in the Treasure Valley. All Treasure Valley citizens deserve access to affordable, fresh, local, sustainably produced food.

What is a sustainable local food system?
Community-based activities relating to the production, storage, distribution, and consumption of food that are designed and operated to be ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially responsible.

What is local?

  • 100 mile radius
  • Afternoon drive
  • Traditional trading region
  • Service area of regional hospitals & newspapers

Local Food Assessment

Help raise funds for our local food assessment with our monthly dinner & movie fundraiser!

In January 2009, 140+ community members gathered to discuss the need for local food and prioritize nine areas of the food system.

  • Production
  • Policy
  • Distribution
  • Education
  • Processing
  • Information
  • Business Development
  • Disposal
  • Storage

The major project for 2010 is doing a food assessment.  The
assessment is essential to inform the development of a sustainable
local food system through the evaluation of factors limiting the
production and distribution of local food.  A food assessment will
answer questions such as:

  • How much and what type of food is grown in the Treasure Valley?
  • How much food  and what type of food is needed for our
    Treasure Valley population?
  • How much food is imported and exported?
  • How is local food distributed?
  • How accessible is the local food that is available?
  • What factors impact the production, processing and distribution
    of local food?

The food assessment will be done in phases and the total cost will be
$25,000-$35,000.
